A few years ago, before I decided to stay home with my kids, I worked as a veterinarian technician in an animal hospital. While at that job I saw so many clients who would bring in their dog and be upset because they had eaten something in the house, other than food, and were now sick. Crate training will also help with potty training. Make sure you put your pet on a regular schedule for potty breaks and use the crate when you are gone or need your pet to rest. Another thing to consider when purchasing a crate is to make sure that you buy a crate big enough to accommodate the full growth of your pet. When your pet is a puppy and you are crate training, make sure that the crate has a divider panel. You can adjust the placement of the divider panel so that the puppy does not have full use of the crate thus creating the ?den? feeling that will make your dog feel comfortable and cozy. In this situation the dog will not want to go in its den and will keep the area clean. If you give the puppy the full area of the crate it may be too large and the dog will make one area of the crate his potty area and the other area as his sleeping area. Adjust the divider panel so that the dog has enough area to get up and stretch but not enough room to eliminate.

Crate training your puppy or dog is just a smart thing to do for you and your pet. It will give you the sense of security and peace knowing that your pet is not getting in harms way while you are away.

I like the product and it does work once I have it locked in place. It’s getting it locked in place that takes so long. I move it from room to room, so if it’s set up and never moved it would be great. However, I always have to fiddle with the thing for minutes to get everything lined up just so it will glide into place. Bit of a hassle with little kids with little fingers eager to help. So I’d say if you are buying it to set it up and leave it….excellent choice, if you are going to move it from room to room not so good.

I got a couple of these to corral my new puppy in the kitchen area of our house. They work great for that. However, I am 5′7", not short, and sometimes it can be difficult to step over the gate. (They are easy to remove and replace as needed)If they were a couple inches shorter they’d be perfect. That aside, this is a great, inexpensive solution to a common problem.

Edit to add: I have been using these gates for about 4 months now, and they have been kicked, tripped over, and otherwise mis-treated. They are both holding up perfectly fine. I don’t know what the people were doing to break their gates, but it must have been something akin to nuclear war! I am very happy with this purchase, and have actually been considering buying another one to keep the adventurous pup from going upstairs, where she then cries for someone to come get her. *eye roll*

A pet relies on its owner to look after it. Sometimes a veterinarian is too far away when your puppy needs immediate attention. Would you be able to administer basic first aid if you needed to?

It is up to you to be able to administer the first aid that your pet needs when he needs it. Something can happen at virtually any time at home or away from home. You should have with you a first aid kit that is designed for your pet in mind. If you take your pet away from home frequently, make sure to store the first aid kit in your car as well. These tools can save your pet?s life.

A common dilemma is the bee sting. If this happens to your pet, you should restrain the animal and use a pair of tweezers to remove the stinger. Then, bath the area with a mixture of water and baking soda to relieve some of the pain. You can help to reduce swelling by using an ice pack on the area and using Benedryl. Make sure you know how much to give your pet by asking the vet.

What should you do if your dog is injured?

You?ll need to approach the animal slowly and carefully because they may snap or bite at you. It is just a nature reaction for them to do this. See what has happened to them and reassure the pet that you are not going to hurt her through a smooth voice and calmness.

Your first concern is to stop the flow of blood as quickly as possible. Apply pressure to the wound and hold it there. Make sure to use a cloth that is clean and change them as needed. Keep as much pressure on it as possible until you get to your vet. If you need to, tape a thick gauze pad to the wound. You?ll want to keep as much pressure on the wound though, so if possible have someone else transport you.

In the case of choking, you should use a flashlight to check down the throat. If you can, remove the object. If you can?t see it, you?ll need to use a Heimlich maneuver that is designed for your pet. As a pet owner, you should have this basic training taught to you. It is important to do it correctly in order to protect against serious injury of the pet. You can get this type of training at your local humane society or through your vet. You can also learn how to give your pet CPR and how to deal with serious injury and poisoning.

This is not an accurate understanding (or observation) of how dogs learn.

In my experience, dogs recognize sound patterns, rhythms and tonality. Have you ever noticed how your dog’s ears perk up when you ask, Do you want a cookie? just as much as they do if you just say, Cookie?

Now, when you’re out in the field, sometimes it’s best to have commands that are only one syllable. However, for non-essential commands, I like to incorporate a bit of humor into my training.

For example, Shake, becomes, Slap me some skin, brotha, or What’s shakin’, Mama?

And, Hup (short for Get in the truck,) become, Get your tookis in the truck.

Kennel up, humorously becomes, Get in the mansion.

Bark transforms into, Who’s your daddy?

The command I use for attack, becomes, Easy. Short for Take it easy. (This tends to fool the bag guy into thinking you’ve got an uncontrollably vicious animal. And tactically, it’s not always beneficial to let a potential assailant know you’re giving your dog the attack command).

When I put the food bowl down and make the dog wait for the release command, the normal Free or Take a break, becomes Chow time! (The release command in this context is situational).

Anyway–the point is: Have fun with your training. Your dog doesn’t inherently understand one word from another–he only gets the associations you create with each word. This is why you can train your dog in a variety of different languages, and your friends will think your dog is multi-lingual.

I once had a dog that spoke three languages. (Or understood three languages at least!)

And I’m not above lowering myself and my dog training for cheap laughs amongst my friends.

Meanwhile, they all think that the dog must be a genius. And trust me–your dog will have a big smile on her face as she soaks up all the attention, too.

I bought this product because although I am not a single parent, with my husband working primarily overseas I live very much like one and needed a way to be able to mow the lawn, work out, or just plain relax with out having to stress out that my 10 month old was into EVERYTHING or have to hire out a baby sitter!
