Many Forms of Dog Beds

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

In today’s society animals are sometimes being treated better than humans are. One of the latest ways people have created to pamper their pets are pet beds. These beds come in many forms many forms and for many animals. The most popular form of pet beds is dog beds. Dog beds are very popular among pet owners. In most cases the people who spend a great deal of money on a bed for their dog are those who could be considered upper class. Other people may possibly make their dog beds.

Dog beds take many forms. Traditionally dogs were given a box with a blanket, if they were permitted to stay inside the house. In most cases the dog was placed outside in the yard in a doghouse, which once again had a blanket. The box and the blanket was the easiest and simplest form that a dog bed could take. As years went on and people became more and more aware of animal rights and what classified as animal abuse, they began treating their pets better and tried to find more comfortable places for their dogs to sleep. People exchanged boxes and blankets for pillows. People either made or purchased oversized pillows for their dogs to sleep on. At first the pillows were thin and not really fancy. There were made out of whatever materials were available. Today however, people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a large pillow for their dog.

These pillows or dog beds can be purchased at most pet supply stores or in pet stores in general. You may also find some form of dog bed at the vets office. If you live in certain parts of the United States there are people who specialize in making dog beds. These designers of dog beds make them in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are made out of variety of materials. For example you could have dog beds that are made out of silk or you could have bed made from a more simple material such as flannel.

You can also find dog beds online at some dog supply stores. Here you will be able to browse through the selection of dog beds that are available. The prices of the dog beds will vary depending on make and size and of course material. There may be an additional cost for shipping and handling when you order your dog beds online.

3 Phases All Dog Training Follows

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

All dog training follows 3 phases. This goes for positive methods, force methods, or a combination of both, these three phases apply to them all.

They are:

1. The Learning Phase. 2. The Correction Phase. 3. The Proofing (or distraction) Phase

Let’s look at how these three items link together for for a solid training process.

1. The learning phase. Before a dog can perform a behavior they must learn it. In this phase there are no corrections, no distractions, and the dogs are allowed to make mistakes while we teach them what we want them to do.

The learning phase is where most owners go wrong and start to hender the training process by being strict and putting too much stress on the dog.

Imagine it like this, a kid is learning their ABC’s for the first time. Each time the kid makes a mistake the teacher hits them with a ruler on the arm.

Is that a fair way to teach? No. Yet owners world wide think this is the right way. It is not and it only hender your efforts.

2. Once the dog has a clear understanding of the behavior (Can perform it on cue at least 95% of the time) we add corrections.

Once again people misunderstand and think it’s okay to go to town on their dogs and correct them for any minor infraction.

And once again they are wrong. In the correction phase you want to give your dog the chance to work and be successful but if they disobey we introduce corrections in order to show them their are conseqensces for their behavior.

3. To increase the dogs ability to perform the behavior we introduce distractions.

Starting out with mild distractions you want to gradually introduce distractions that are great enough to cause disobedience. The great the distraction the more likely the dog is going to disobey or not respond in a timely manner.

Distraction training never ends. You want to introduce new distractions and new situations to your dogs on a regular basis and help them learn how to be more reliable in every day situations.

If the training method you are using to does not have one or more of these phases then you should start looking for one that has them all. You will get better results as a result.

Dog Bed - A Comfy Spot Where Your Dog Can Rest

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Just like you, your dog needs a comfortable place to sleep. If you do not think so, then why does he jump up on your bed every night? Now, there you go. You see, your dog likes to relax and instead of having to shoo him off your bed, all you have to do is get him a dog bed. It is a plush place that he can call his very own.

Now, you might not think it, but there are actually a lot of dog bed selections available. For example, maybe you have a larger dog like a golden retriever or a St. Bernard. Well, then a great choice for would be something that is also big in size and easily moveable, like one that is just a soft layer of padding cover in fabric that lies flat on the floor. If you have a smaller dog, like a poodle or yorkie, then a nice choice for you would be something that is in the shape of a donut with plush sides, making it nice for them to curl up and take it easy.

Really, there are a lot of options available and these are just some of the simpler selections out there. If you are looking for something a little more elaborate, you can even get ones that are in the shape of little human beds, featuring bed frames and mattresses. Another elaborate option are ones that are in the shape of small sofas and they even come with cushions and pillows. There are many other novelty ones available too, like ones in the shape of little race cars and you can even get ones that are in the shape of dog houses, but are made entirely out of soft padding and fabric.

If your dog already has its very own dog bed, but you are still looking for a nice way to pamper him, there are a lot of other dog accessories that let you do exactly that. Like, you can get him a decorative dog dish or collar, sparkling jewelry, toys, and there are even dog clothes for a great way to keep your dog styling. For a stress free way to check out all the of different things that you could pamper your dog with, along with looking at all the dog beg choices, instead of going to the local pet store, just hit the Internet for some online shopping. It is fast and you do not have to leave the comfort of your home to do it.

So, if you do not think that your dog needs a comfortable place to rest every night, think again because that is the main reason why he jumps onto your bed. Instead of having to shoo him off, just get a dog bed for him. That way, he has a plush spot to relax and will keep out of your hair. What are you waiting for, get one today, then everyone in your home will get a good night’s rest.

The Newfoundland: A Hero in History and Most Loved Companion

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

When Joe–at the age of seventeen–neared his last days, I ran away from home. I knew I wouldn’t be able to take it. Yes, literally I escaped witnessing my favorite pet’s death. Probably that’s why he still feels alive to me.

Joe, a Newfoundland mix, was plucked from the town’s pound when he was a six week-old puppy. Although a mix, he had all the traits of the breed, starting with loyalty, gentleness, and watching over our children. He loved life and he loved food. Twelve years after his passing, our sons still consider him as their younger brother. As a breed, a Newfoundland is considered a working dog, but Joe was the most wonderful pet one could ever wish for.

The Newfoundland is thought to be a cousin to the now extinct American Black Wolf, which also had the classical white spot on its chest. During the first attempts of the conquistadors to settle the new continent, Newfoundlands roamed the plains in huge, wild packs since they were indigenous to North America.

What Thoreau said in Walden about Newfoundlands does not even begin to do this breed justice. “A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much.” Newfoundlands are much more than that. They are not only working dogs but also the most loyal companions one can ever hope for.

For centuries, these dogs were tamed and trained by the Indians, Algonquins and later the Sioux, as load carriers before the Spaniards introduced the horse to the Americas.

Newfoundlands were also the breed who traveled on explorers’ ships. As a good watchdog, a Newfoundland was the dog of choice on board. The dog also had swimming, life-saving, and sniffing abilities. A Newfoundland smelled land before it could be seen from the ship and alerted everyone with his excited behavior.

The Newfoundland of today is a big heavy dog with muscular shoulders, strong neck, strong-boned forelegs, long black fur with a white spot on the chest, and a powerful body. The original Newfoundland had a short neck, but in today’s dog shows, the breed is expected to have a longer neck to help carry itself with dignity. The average adult dog is 28 inches high and weighs somewhere between 120 to 150 pounds.

Some Newfoundlands have white and black or bronze fur as opposed to the general black with white tuft on chest. The coat of an average Newfoundland is bright black and water resistant. Its outer layer is long and smooth in contrast to the short and dense inner layer. The lesser Newfoundland or St. John’s Newfoundland is the smaller version of the original breed.

The temperament of this breed is inimitable. Incredible feats of Newfoundlands abound in the news media, because intelligent and unusually adaptable dogs that they are, they quickly figure out what their owners want to do and they start working with their owners toward the same goals.

A Newfoundland is very loyal, dignified, fun-loving and soft-natured. His gentleness and serenity has made him the star of children’s stories, like the Newfoundland in Peter Pan.

The feats of this breed have been etched in history as well. It is said, when Leif Ericson visited Newfoundland in 1001, he carried his dogs with him that mated with the original Newfoundlands, thus producing the forefathers of the present day Newfoundland dogs.

A brave Newfoundland saved a French emperor from drowning. That emperor was Napoleon Bonaparte.

During the Civil War, a Newfoundland named Major fought the confederates by biting them until he was killed with a musket shot to his head in the Battle of Mansfield, Lousiana.

During World War II, Newfoundlands were used as carriers of water, supplies, and ammunition. Canadians claim that they have documented proof that this dog was in existence even during 3000 BC together with the Canadian Indians of Newfoundland who buried their dead together with their dogs.

The Newfoundland has been made the official animal emblem on October 5, 1972, by the government of Newfoundland, Canada. Not only the Newfoundland as breed has his picture on the Canadian stamps now, but also a Newfoundland as pet has carved his love in this owner’s heart.

Pursuing The Perfect Dog Shelter

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Is Your Dog Shelter a Haven or a Hell

Anyone who has visited a dog shelter or dog pound may well have become concerned as to the condition of the dogs in the facility, the conditions the dogs are living in and the administration of the dog shelter.

If you have ever had these concerns, here are a few tips on how best to proceed. The ultimate goal must always be to better the care and living condition of every dog that is brought to the dog pound or is living under the care and control of the dog shelter for any period of time. While idealistic, we must always continue pursuing the perfect dog shelter.

Dog Shelter Dos and Don’ts

Stay Calm and make an effort to work with the shelter to address any concerns that you may have. Many dog pounds are under staffed, under financed and have limited resources. You may find that the dog pound is open to suggestions and help to improve conditions that the dogs in their control are experiencing.

Learn Learn and learn some more- Before making a complaint that a certain condition is unacceptable, get the facts. For example, if your dog is lost and you go to a dog shelter to look for him, you may be interviewed before going though the dog shelter proper. This may seem like waste of time. Why are they asking you all these questions .? You just want to find your beloved dog, right?

Well, the dog shelter staff may actually be protecting you and your dog by asking you a series of questions about your dog.

Here’s what one dog shelter had to say
Those looking for a lost dog must provide a description, date, and location where the dog was lost. This information frequently eliminates many dogs in the dog shelter from the lost you will naturally want to see. It also prevents those with unethical reasons for looking at dogs such as a “buncher”., from viewing a dog then claiming that dog as his/her own.

We discussed this problem in our article about The Pet Safety Protection Act , which can be found on our site.

The unethical claimant may want the dog for a pet with no concern as to the dog’s rightful family that may be hunting for the dog. Or, as in the case of “bunchers”, the claimant may want the dog because they believe they can get a good price for that dog from a research facility. These research labs use dogs for medical and other experiments. Using dogs as caged experiment animals is a cruel fate, and one we hope will be outlawed by legislation.

If the dog pound employee believes the potential dog claimant is not the true guardian of the dog, additional proof may be required such as medical veterinary records or family photos.

So, in many cases, what appears to be unreasonable may in fact be appropriate and proper to protect the dog and the rightful dog guardian.

On the other hand, many shelters do have unacceptable and inhumane conditions that are prevalent. If you believe that a problem exists, here are a few tips on a course of action.

Is the Dog Shelter run by the County or Privately. This is important to know if a true problem needs to be addressed. A complaint to the county may be of little help if the shelter is privately run and vice versa.

Communicate and Listen- Depending on the true hierarchy of the dog shelter you should address all concerns to the individual in charge . Do this in a reasonable and polite way. You will get little cooperation after a rant and name calling session. Document your concerns in writing wherever possible. Get as many photos as you can of the problem condition and keep a record of everyone you speak to, their title, and the time, date and place

Be an Advocate- If, after you do your research and communicate with the person in charge, you find that conditions which need to be corrected at the dog shelter are ignored, you may want to go further. Start a group of advocates for a change in condition at the dog shelter. Develop a clear list of objectives based upon research and facts which you uncover. Contact your local government officials, dog rescue organizations and the media for support. The dog whose life you may save or enhance while at the local dog shelter will be grateful for your calm, assertive advocacy.

Choosing The Best Pets For Kids

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

“Can I have a puppy? Please, oh please, I’ll take care of it and look after it and everything”

Just what do you say to your kids when they ask for a pet? It is perfectly true that growing up with a family pet can teach children responsibility and to develop their social skills. Also cultivating good feelings towards pet animals helps kids to develop a sense of self esteem and help them to establish trusting relationships with other human beings. But before you give in to your kid’s demands for a pony, rabbit, salamander, kitten, boxer, python, or macaw, there is plenty for you to consider.

The first thing to keep in mind is that no matter how much your kid promises that she or he will be the one to take care of the pet, some if not all of that responsibility will fall upon you. That is an inevitable, inescapable fact. No matter how good the child’s intention is, there will be some, and perhaps many, occasions when other things take priority in their minds and the pet is unintentionally neglected. That is, the pet would be neglected if you were not there to step in, because somebody has to.

Secondly a child may sincerely believe that the thing that they most want in the world is a cute little black and white kitten, just like their best friend of the moment has. The child has really convinced themselves that they want a kitten, and a kitten will hold their interest for ever and ever. And so it would, until their new best friend of next week gets a pet lizard which is just sooo cool. So you will want to make absolutely sure that the pet that your child is demanding will be a long term passion, and not just a fleeting interest.

It will be a good idea to discuss the idea with the whole family. How do they feel about yapping dogs, hair shedding Persian cats, squawking parrots? If one of your children is allowed their very own pet hamster, will all of the child’s siblings demand a pet of their own too? Does anybody in the family suffer with an allergy that would make sharing their home with a certain animal intolerable?

Is the type of animal your child is asking for suitable for your family, and your family’s life style? A dog that needs two trips to the park every single day may not be suitable for a family who is away from the house all day. And no matter how much the child promises that they will walk the dog, there will be times that they will fail to do so, (and times that you may not want them to, after dark for example). Choosing pets for kids is not easy, often the type of pet that they plead for would not be the best match for their age and experience with animals.

You should also consider cost. Not only the cost of acquiring a pet, but more importantly the cost of taking care of it. All animals involve a financial commitment, food, vet bills, pet care products etc. You don’t want to acquire a pet for your kid only to find that you don’t have the financial means to keep it. Small pets for kids often have less costs involved in looking after them than larger pets do.

There are many other things to consider when choosing pets for kids, but hopefully this short article will have prompted you to think about the fact that buying an animal for a child, is not the same thing as buying a kid a cell phone or a bicycle. Pets are living breathing creatures, they need care, they need commitment, they need love.

How to Feed Your Bearded Dragon Lizard

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Bearded Dragon Lizards make ideal pets for first time that owners and children alike. This is because of their docile appearance and their loyal demeanor. Also, Bearded Dragon Lizards are easy to handle and will not cause any trouble even if they are moved to place to place.

Given this, the only problem with bearded track and lizards may be their sometimes peculiar habits and their diet. Feeding a Bearded Dragon Lizard can be a pain sometimes. This is because of their unique diet.

Bearded Dragon Lizards are omnivores, meaning they will eat pretty much anything. However, in the wild these lizards will feast on various vegetation, worms, grasshoppers and insects. They will also go for small animals such as mice and other tiny creatures.

If you plan to keep the Bearded Dragon Lizard in your home, you at least have to know its diet and the methods of feeding them. Without this knowledge, you will never be able to properly care for the pet. Fortunately, most pet stores have supplies you will need to feed your little lizard friend.

Bearded Dragon Lizards are voracious eaters. This is especially true when they are young. They can eat a lot and will need this fuel to grow and to go about. This means you will have to supply them with an ever-increasing amount of food if you purchase the lizard while it is still a hatchling.

Insects
Insects are a great part of the Bearded Dragon Lizard’s diet. While most lizards also eat vegetation, growing hatchlings have a preference for crushed insects instead. Bearded Dragon Lizards are hardy hunters and you’ll have to provide them with sufficient food so that they can remain sated.

In fact, if you don’t feed your Bearded Dragon Lizard well enough, they may very well chomp down on their own tales and appendages. For them anything that moves could possibly be prey-or food for that matter. So if you don’t feed them correctly, you might see less and less of them as they devour themselves.

Bearded Dragon Lizards love grasshoppers, meal worms, and other bugs. So you have to feed the hatchlings crushed insects two to three times a day. Make sure that when you feed your dragon, you crush them enough so that they don’t cause any blockage in the dragon’s digestive system.

Gradually increase the amount of food they eat as the lizard grows. When your bearded dragon is an adult, you will have to feed them a good amount of crickets, meal worms and a pinky mouse once in awhile.

Leafy Greens
Bearded Dragon Lizards also love leafy vegetables. Give them a good stock of vegetation to work with as they grow older. Young dragon lizards are not interested in such vegetation as they are growing up. But you can incorporate it gradually into their diet.

You may also incorporate different types of vegetables and fruits such as apples, radish, turnips, and pretty much anything in your kitchen. Just make sure you give them fresh ones that are conveniently chopped.

Water
Bearded Dragon Lizards don’t drink water out of a saucer; they absorb it from dew in the wild. To mimic this effect you have to spray the lizard once a day. Although he can get its moisture from the vegetables it eats, it would be best if you had it to make moisture from its tongue while you spray it. Make sure you don’t allow it to dehydrate as it could very well affect its health.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Puppy And Dog Information

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is happy, energetic smaller dog that makes a great watch dog. They can be kept in an apartment as long as they can be walked for exercise. A properly fenced in yard is best for exercise but they are diggers and known as escape artists. Never leave them off the leash as they will take off after an interesting scent. They generally like other animals and will socialize with them. They also like children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is 13 to 15 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 31 to 40 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is no exception. Although considered a healthy breed, be on the look out for ear problems, Aseptic meningitis and hereditary eye problems. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has a long rough, harsh to the touch coat with a thick, short under coat. They should be brushed at least weekly. Long hair at the bottom of feet may need to be trimmed.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her nails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Life Span

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen come from the La Vendee district of France. They are a scent hound and were bred for hunting rabbits. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1991.

Grooming For Dog’s Health And Comfort

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Dogs make an excellent pet and have been considered since time immoral, men’s best friend. Since we love so much our dogs, we always want them to remain clean, healthy and fit. Dogs need very good cleaning and grooming for keeping them healthy. Some simple tips are given below:

To keep the teeth clean, you need to brush their teeth everyday, two times just like we brush our own teeth. We must avoid forming plaque on their teeth. This habit should start right when dogs are little puppies.

When you feed your dog in after noon you can give carrots. Carrots are hard food and act as teeth scraper also. Always try to give hard food to your dog, not the soft canned food. Soft food might look good but in fact spoils the teeth of pets very much.

Dogs suffer from various diseases like heartworms. Heartworms can be detected by doing simple blood test on the dogs. If you suspect that dog suffers from heartworms, always consult the veterinary doctor. Giving self medication to dogs is not a good idea. Pills are helpful for treatment.

Claws of dogs need special attention. Every six to eight weeks, the claws need to be trimmed. If your dog is very active then maybe a small term of two to four weeks is better. When you start trimming the claws, take it as dulling exercise not shortening exercise. This way you will not cut the claws too short thereby exposing the pink part.

Dogs get ear mites also. A proper grooming means that they should be free from, any pests. Ear mites infect dogs and suck their blood. To keep mites away, you need to clean the crusts off the ears regularly. Most vets recommend anything that contains pyrethrums which is an insecticide made from chrysanthemums as a good medicine. Once you have chosen what medication to give, pick it over the counter from any pet stores, simply drop a few drops into the dog’s ear (make sure you follow the instructions as per your particular medication). Now, massage the base of the ear for 5 minutes or so. The simple massage will saturate the ear well.
To keep your dog healthy, you should give him lot of exercises. The more exercise you give him, easier will be it for you as he will be better trained and will spend less time digging your yards.
To keep him clean start brushing him everyday. You must use a soft bristle comb. There are lots of brushes available in the market. These combs come in varied varieties like stainless steel comb, a soft bristle brush. The choice will depend on the kind of coat that your dog has. Buy a comb/brush that will suit the coat.

When you take your dog for a bath, wash the coat really well, preferably using a shampoo. You can use a tub wash or a shower depending whether you have puppy or a dog.
