Before You Buy Your Freshwater Tropical Fish

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

So you’ve decided on which aquarium to buy, been and purchased it, and set it up in a prominent location in your home – what next? Before you rush out and buy your freshwater tropical fish, you need to make sure you have all the equipment necessary. At the very least you need a lid for the aquarium, lighting, heating and a filtration system. It is very important you buy the correct size for your aquarium.

For instance, the lighting needs to be sufficient to light the entire aquarium, likewise the filter must be able to cope with the amount of water you will have, or it will not work to optimum efficiency. Buying a heater which will have to work hard to keep your aquarium at the correct temperature may be cheaper, but will end up a false economy, as it will soon break. If you are in any doubt as to what to buy to go with your aquarium, check with a reputable aquatic dealer.

You will now need to decorate your aquarium. For this you need gravel, and by this I mean special gravel you buy from an aquatic dealer, the quality is important. You also need a lot of it, because you need to cover the base of the aquarium by at least 2-3 inches (5-7.5cm). This will allow the plants to root properly, and if you have an under-gravel filtration system you will need this much to cover the filter.

To complete the decoration you will need some plants, either real or artificial, and you may want to consider some bogwood, which looks attractive in an aquarium, and as it has been treated it is suitable. Do not add shells or coral, as these can hurt your fish, and can also change the balance of the water, as well as be sharp and may hurt the fish. Aquatic dealers also sell other artificial decorations that you may want to purchase. Ensure that whatever you do you give your fish some hiding places.

Next, purchase a net, a bucket, a gravel cleaner and a glass cleaner – these are essential tools of the trade, and will be used often. I would also recommend buying de-chlorinator – tap water may be great for people, but it was not made for tropical fish. All the chemicals which are put in the water are not good for freshwater tropical fish, so the water will either need to be left standing for a couple of days, and be subjected to strong aeration, or have a de-chlorinator added to it.

Finally, purchase some fish food, so that when you bring your new freshwater tropical fish home you have something to feed them.

Dog Obedience Training Basics

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The most important things in dog training are consistency, keeping dog’s attention and understanding your dog.

To get the respect of your dog you must be consistent. You should make a set of do’s and don’ts for your dog. Follow these guidelines to the letter, if a dog does something desirable always reward it, if a dog does something bad punish him or her appropriately. In dogs world consistency is a sign of a leader. You will make your training my easier and effective by being a leader who the dog respects and follows.

Ninety percent of your dogs training will be getting his or hers attention and keeping him focused on yourself. If your dog cannot focus on you, it will not listen to you, and thus making the commands you give fall on empty ears. I will describe a technique on how to get and keep your dog’s attention with few very simple exercises. First, most dogs will respond to their name, so call them and when they look at you tell them “watch”. After doing it few times the dog will associate the command with looking at you. After you have perfected the “watch” command, start doing exercises aimed at expanding your dog’s attention span. A good technique is to hold a treat with your teeth and while standing in front of your dog give it a watch command. Stand in position for a few seconds keeping dogs attention, then praise. Repeat the exercise until your dog focus on you for about a minute. The more attention your dog can give you the better student it will be.

A vital part of dog training is the understanding of how a dog thinks. Dogs, like small children, have a very short attention span. Most dogs can be focused on training for about ten to twenty minutes, after that time they will start loosing focus and will require a small break. A good idea is to make regular training sessions of 20-30 minutes per day. Another important thing is to make the training fun for the dog. Make the dog look forward to the training time instead of dreading it. To achieve this you should always make their effort worthwhile. After every successful command make sure to give them a treat or praise them with very excited voice. The more willing the dog is to train the more effective the training will be!

Incorporate these techniques into your training sessions and in no-time you will be ready to proceed to much more complex obedience training exercises. You and your dog will both enjoy the time spent together, your dog will respect you for being a responsible owner and other people will appreciate your dog’s great behavior after you are done!

3 Quick Tips to Keep Your Pit Bull Out of Trouble and Healthy Too

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The following article will share with you three (3) tips you can use to curb behavior problems and keep your Pit Bull healthy too.

Tip #1: K9 to 5. Work is a must.

By work I mean something your Pit Bull must do in order to shed excess energy. A job is not only a great way to exercise your dog, it’s also a great way to curb behavior problems.

How does this curb behavior problems?

From my own research and experience I can tell you with 100% confidence that 95% of all behavior problems are caused by lack of stimulation.

In short, your big lovable Pit Bull is out and out bored stupid.

A bored dog will start to exhibit negative behaviors in order to relieve this excess stress caused by being bored.

Your task, give your dog something to do. Herding, agility, obedience, weight pulling, tracking, any of these would be a great job for your Pit Bull.

Tip #2: Cut out the Lap dog Routine.

Did I just say to stop loving your Pit Bull?

Not at all, what I mean is, there is a time for love and a time for your dog to be a dog.

When asked why Rover is jumping I respond by asking how much do you spoil Rover?

9 times out of 10 I get a list of things from all day, to oh he’s just like my baby, to he loves to lie on the couch for 20 hours a day!

Read that last one. There’s the answer to Rover’s jumping problem.

He’s giving too much love.

It’s possible and it happens all the time.

Pit Bulls are Pit Bulls not children or people.
They need structure and leadership. Not over-bearing you are so cute I just want to squeeze your cheeks until you pop, attention.
Your task is to give them less attention and more of what they really need. Structure and leadership.

Again, I’m not saying you shouldn’t love your dog or spoil them. But there has to be a limit to how much you give them both.

Tip #3: Do you walk or do you stroll?

A stroll is a short, light walk around the block or up to the local store for a soda and some bubble gum.

A walk is 2-12 miles of exercise that every single Pit Bull must have every single day in order to thrive.

What? 2 miles! Are you crazy?

Dogs, by nature (you know that funny lady Mother Nature has her quirks) are roaming animals.

Watch wild dogs, they run for miles upon miles, they hunt by out lasting their prey through stamina.

Pit Bulls while domesticated are much the same. They need long walks everyday in order to really get rid of that super energy they are known for.

Your task is to add 1-2 miles to your walk over the next 7-10 days.

In summary

Without work, structure and exercise, Pit Bulls will turn the stress resulting from the lack of these critical canine needs into negative, annoying behaviors.

I have never, not once seen a Pit Bull with a job that gets plenty of exercise jump on guests, bark all day long, or chew the couch into 10,000 little chunks.

Why?

Work gives them mental and physical stimulation and releases stress.
Structure gives them security and safety from the “wild” things out there in the world.
Exercise gives fulfills their instincts to roam and investigate the world around them.

After you have given your dog these three things, then give them the love and attention they deserve.

If you think I’m crazy, that your dog gets plenty of exercise and that’s not the reason they misbehave, try it out for yourself. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

What are you waiting for?

Go for it!

When Horses Fly

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Horses can fly, well, almost. At least they think they can as well.

One time I decided I wanted to ride my Arab Stallion Khero at dusk. It may have been the first time he was ridden at dark. So off to the barn I went, hopped on and cantered out for the ride.

Khero is an awesome horse. I raised him from a baby, the day he was born actually. His mom was old Crabbit line and his father was also older Egyptian Arab from Moraffic. Khero was raised with a lot of care to behavior as I intended to keep him a stallion. When I’d take him out as a youngster I’d walk him through the mare barns and as soon as he started talking I’d make sure to shut him up and have him behave. As a result he could be trailered and ridden on trails with mares everywhere and he was always a perfect gentleman.

Oh this is about flying right?

So I’m out on my ride. He and I are cantering down the trail, dusk is setting in. Your eyes are adjusting as it’s getting darker by the minute. Khero is going through the same adjustments.

Horses are always looking at the ground to feel sure about where they’re going. Well as the darkness sets in and you’re on their back riding, there comes a point where the horse really looses sight of the ground beneath. This is where it all gets fun.

It’s at this point where the horse looses sight of the ground that it feels like its running on air or at least that was how Khero experienced it. So at this point he’s raising his head and his front feet are starting to reach up into the sky – he really thinks it’s time to fly and for several seconds you might actually feel like it just might happen as well.

Of course we adults know that’s not really possible. But can you imagine a child riding and experiencing such a thing. If you haven’t experienced this phenomenon you’re missing something and I encourage you to find it. There’s not much better experience in the equestrian arena than coming close to flying on a horse. It will make you smile for a few days. Horses can be so much fun.

Homemade Pet Food - The Latest Animal Dietary Trend

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Pet owners in the United States and in some other countries began to seriously worry about the safety of pet food in the Spring of 2007. Pet food was found to be contaminated on what can only be called a massive scale. Pet owners in many different locations were faced with very sick pets — even with pets that ended up dying.

As a result, the move towards preparing and creating homemade pet food became even stronger. In fact, over the course of the past fifteen years, a growing number of people have taken to making their own pet food for their companion animals. There are a number of stellar benefits associated with creating homemade pet food for your pets.

Wholesomeness and Safety

Of course, as has been mentioned previously, many people have become concerned about the safety of commercially made pet food. And, as has also been mentioned, this has driven more and more pet owners towards making their own food for their companion animals. Thus, one of the most obvious and most significant benefits associated with homemade pet food is the fact that you can be assured of its safety and wholesomeness. Because you are making the food, you know what has gong into it. You will not be worrying that you are taking some sort of crap shot by purchasing pet food off the shelf at the market or pet store.

The problem is trying to dig through all of the claims and counterclaims associated with commercially produced pet food. It becomes very hard to determine what fact is and what fiction is when it comes to commercially made pet food.

By making your pet’s food directly, you know precisely the nutritional content that is in the food. You have 100% control over what goes in and what stays out of your pet’s food items.

Saving Money with Homemade Pet Food

Many people have found that maintaining their pets can be an expensive proposition. Because pet owners overall have become more astute about what their pets should eat, many pet owners are investing more money in commercial pet food products. In truth, this really can become more expensive.

By making your pet’s own food, you really have the ability to prepare high quality food for your pet and not pay high prices for those meals.

Homemade Pet Food — Variety for Your Companion Animal

Pets have a number of things in common with people. For example, most pets like at least some variety when it comes to their food. By making your pet’s own food, you have the ability to provide you friend with choice, change and variety when it comes to its menu.

Creating Homemade Pet Food can be Enjoyable

Giant Schnauzer Puppy And Dog Information

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The Giant Schnauzer is a beautiful dog and she makes a great watch dog and guard dog. She will protect you. On the downside, she really requires an experienced handler and early socializing of pets, other dogs and children. She is a dominant dog and will continually test the waters and push the envelope of who is in charge here anyway? She is extremely smart and a fast learner. She requires space to exercise and she is not an apartment dog. At the least, she needs a properly fenced in yard, at the best, plenty of acres to run on. Some people think that she is great with children, others do not trust her, especially with children under about 13 years old. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Giant Schnauzer is 25 to 28 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 60 to 80 pounds. The female ranges from 23 to 26 inches to the withers and 55 to 75 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Giant Schnauzer is no exception. Be on the look out for Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), orthopedic problems, eye disease, toe cancer, epilepsy and bloat (Gastric Dilation-Volvulus, the second leading killer of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read up on this). Feeding more then once a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Giant Schnauzer has a double coat consisting of a harsh, wiry, hard, very dense outer coat and a soft inner coat. They shed little but need to be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. She also needs to see a groomer occasionally for clipping.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Giant Schnauzer can live between 12 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Giant Schnauzer comes from Bavaria, Germany where it was known as the Riesenschnauzer. They may be a cross between the Bouvier des Flandres, black Great Danes, smooth-coated drover dogs and rough-coated shepherds. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1930.

Why Your Dog Needs a Dog Bed

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Starting out with a high quality dog bed can help keep your dog fit and healthy. If you get your hound used to sleeping in one spot it’s less likely to sleep on the floor or other hard surfaces which can cause arthritis and calluses in later years. He’s also less likely to sleep on your bed, which may be a blessing if he grows to his fill 100lb size! A dog bed allows your pet to have his own space, a place where he can curl up, relax and sleep.

Some Details to Consider for Your Dog Bed

Whey you start out looking for a dog bed you should ask yourself these questions: Does he sprawl and stretch out completely? Does your hound shed or have any other disorder that will cause the bed to need constant cleaning? Does your pooch curl up in a ball? Watching his daily behavior will help you select the correct bed for your dog.

Be sure to measure the entire length of your hound at rest to get an idea of how much space he is using so you can select the correct size.

Dog Bed Features and Varieties

The Indoor/Outdoor Bed is tough, water repellent and can be used inside or out. If your pooch has a shedding or odor problem, make certain the cover of the bed is removable and washable. They come in all kinds of colors and materials, and a number of of them you can toss right in the washing machine (the beds, not the dogs!). So make sure the bed is easy to clean. Some beds are also specifically treated to eliminate mold, fungus, or other outdoor hazards which may affect your dog.

Similar to humans, dogs also experience changes as they age. Their joints can stiffen, or their bones become thinner. Cushions and support should be considered for older dogs, as well as pooches with other joint or bone problems. Orthopedic foam tends to provide additional warmth too so if you live in a warmer climate, your hound may prefer a cooling bed like the Canine Cooler to the traditional orthopedic bed.

A slightly elevated dog bed style with soft polyfill conserves heat and the slightly elevated style protects your pet from floor drafts. If your hound likes his head on a pillow, try a lounge bed or couch. Next on the list of requirements is probably a chew proof bed, especially for puppies that like to chew!

So as you can see there are multiple styles of pooch bed, such as indoor or outdoor, heated or not, travel or car beds and as previously mentioned orthopedic beds for the older hound. Most are stuffed with polyfill, often have cedar chips to repel odors and their covers are removable and machine washable. Picking the right type for your dog will help him get a good nights sleep and be a happy rested dog.

Think of the bed as an investment, a number of high quality beds will last the lifetime of your dog, and so will their benefits! When a dog owner thinks about what products will be needed for their new pet, a high quality dog bed should be well up on the list.

Dog Training Tips - Establishing A Pack Hierarchy Within Your Home

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Why Dogs Need To Be Part Of A Pack

In the wild, dogs are part of an active, hierarchical pack. Even domestic dogs still crave this structure in their lives and if they feel that you aren’t providing a suitable pack atmosphere or that you aren’t an adequate pack leader then they will take over that mantle. When this occurs most dogs will begin to misbehave purely because they are confused or feel they need to run the pack. In the worst-case scenario they can become aggressive and dominant over everyone they come into contact with. The key is to prevent the need for this behaviour in the first place and instil the appropriate feelings in your dog; however, it’s never too late to start reconditioning your pet.

When You Should Start Training Your Dog

Sooner is always better than later in terms of training any animal. Puppies are much more receptive to any thoughts or ideas that you try to encourage and are also keener to please. As the saying goes, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” While this isn’t entirely true it is certainly true that starting as early as possible in your dog’s life will give a much greater chance of success in the long run.

A Full Regime Of Training

In many ways, behavioural training is as much about training you the owner as it is about training your dog. The first and most important aspect to remember is that you are the leader of the pack. If you demand something then it must be done or negative reinforcement should be issued (although not in the shape of physical punishment). Similarly, when you dog does something you approve of or that you have asked it to do then positive affirmation is needed. This can be in the shape of a tasty treat, plenty of love, or the use of clicker training but it must be dealt quickly and at exactly the right moment.

Ground Rules – Sitting On Furniture

Bearing in mind that you need to be the dominant force in your pack, it is important to remember that this is about much more than simply reprimanding and congratulating. You need to set very clear ground rules and always stick to them. You are encouraged to stop your dog from sitting on furniture because, in there eyes, this makes them at least equal to you. Sitting on the floor is a sign of subservience and is usually indicative of a dog that knows its place.

Ground Rules – Walking Through Doors

Also be wary of your dog walking through doors before you do. Believe it or not, by walking through first they are indicating that they are above you. If this happens then turn around and walk away from that door as though you had no intention of going in that direction. Wait a minute and then try again. If your dog repeats its attempt to beat you through the door then use your negative reinforcement command. When your dog does well and you are able to walk through the doorway first without her barging past then you should reward them with plenty of love or a treat.

These are only two indications that your dog believes it has a higher stature within your pack than you do but both are clear tells. You should attempt to prevent them both as soon as possible and do not stray from your new guidelines.

Initiating a pack hierarchy is only part of obedience training your dog but it is an important part. Rat Terrier Dogs

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The Rat Terrier dog is an energetic spunky dog which makes it a great watchdog and family companion. Another characteristic is that Rat Terrier dogs get along well with other pets too.

The Rat Terrier dog was named by President Teddy Roosevelt. They were developed in Great Britain from a cross between Smooth Fox Terriers and the Manchester Terriers of the 1800’s. They were brought to America around 1900, and they quickly spread in popularity. In America, breeders crossed this breed again with the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Beagle to retain hunting instincts. It was also crossed with Whippets for their speed, agility, and the blue and brindle color coats.

Rat Terrier dogs are available in many colors. The most common colors are red and white, tri-spotted, solid red, and black and tan. They have a very short hair coat which is easy to groom and this breed does not tend to shed a lot. Brushing does not need to be done on a regular basis, a couple of times a month should do. Baths are also not required too frequently, a couple of times a year should suffice.

The Rat Terrier dog is a small dog standing between 14 and 24 inches and weighing 12 to 35 pounds. Although small this dog does display the toughness of most other Terrier breeds. Untrained they can be destructive and aggressive, but with proper socializing as a young dog, you can easily have a great companion.

Rat Terrier dogs can be a good choice if you live in a small house or apartment. But be sure to give them enough stimulation otherwise they can develop destructive habits if not given the proper outlet for their aggression.

Rat Terrier dogs make great companions and are an excellent choice if you are looking for a dog. With their energy levels and spunkiness they are a welcome addition to any family.

Setting Up a Freshwater Fish Tank

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Adding a freshwater fish tank to your home can be a great way to add a decorative focal point that is fun for everyone. And because home aquariums are becoming more and more popular there is no shortage of fish shops supplying the latest and greatest tanks, accessories and of course fish. The good news is that most of these fish shops are owned by people who like to share their great enthusiasm for all things fish with their customers.

When you decide you would like to enjoy a freshwater fish tank there are several things you will need to keep in mind. Where would you like to put your new fish tank and what size will fit best in the area designated. Fish tanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes so it is best to visit your local fish shop to get a good feel for what is available to fit your needs. Be sure to ask questions about what you are looking for and the shop employees will be able to point you in the right direction.

As you are deciding on the type and size of tank you will also need to think about the type of fish you would like to keep. This is where research into the different species of fish is a must. You cannot simply just pick out the fish you like best at the store and mix them al together. If you are going to have a community tank, that is a tank with many different types of fish in it, then you need to have fish that get along well with others. If you are leaning more towards a Cichlid tank then you need to be more careful as most Cichlids are aggressive towards other fish.

Once you get your new freshwater aquarium it is time to set it up. While most people don’t have the patience the best thing to do is to fill your tank with water, set up you decorative gravel, rocks, plants and anything that catches your eye and let it sit for a few weeks. Be sure to have all your filtration and air supplies running during this time. The reason it is important to do this is to let any chlorine dissipate out of the water and get the beneficial bacteria a chance to develop.

If you put fish in a tank that has had time to get established you will end up with new tank syndrome, which can be extremely harmful to any fish and cause them to die. This bacteria is the primary fish waste disposal resource. Without it toxic levels of ammonia and other waste gases will build up rapidly in the water. Giving the bacteria a chance to cycle will create a fish friendly environment that will protect your purchases.

A freshwater fish tank does take some work, both setting up and maintaining. But the rewards of its look in your home are more than worth it.
