Traveling Overseas with Your Pet

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

If you have a pet, you know how tough it is to leave it while you travel. If you are traveling overseas, there is one program you might consider to make things easier.

Whenever you pass over the boundaries from one country to another, you run into one form or another of customs issues. With pets, this is never more so the case. You pet is a lovable and vital family member to you. To customs officials, it is a potential disease spreader, a veritable ship of the plague if you believe what they say. Since custom officials have the power at a border, this means you pet can end up in quarantine. Quarantine is, of course, a big problem as you probably didn’t plan to sit at the border for a week or two.

Given the globalization going on, an effort has been made to deal with the pet quarantine issue. Ironically, it was started in the United Kingdom. The UK, of course, is one of the hardest places to travel with a pet as the country has brutal rabies prevention policies that can result in your pet being put in quarantine for up to six MONTHS. Talk about ruining your trip!

The program is called PETS. It is essentially a system that creates a pet passport. The passport contains all relevant health information for your pet. Most pertinent is the fact your pet has been treated for rabies by an approved veterinarian. The information is encoded in the passport in a microchip in most cases, so customs officials can read it and let you through customs. To make sure it is the right pet, a microchip is usually also required to be inserted under the skin of your pet.

In 2001, the European Union enacted the program. It allowed people to transfer their pets from country to country via approved transport and not have to deal with the customs problems that typically occurred. Since its passing, the program has been expanded to include the US.

While PETS seems like a perfect answer to pet custom issues, you have to keep in mind this is a government program. In short, it is a bit of a mess. First, you need to contact your Secretary of State to see if your country and the destination country participate. Second, you need to find out what type of documentation you need for both countries. Nope, it isn’t standardized. Third, you need to find out if anything is required at either location besides rabies vaccinations. Typically, more is required, but it depends on what the government in question is trying to prevent at that time.

The Importance of Pet Grooming

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The more authentic information about pet grooming you know, the more likely people are to consider you a pet grooming expert. Read on for even more facts that you can share.

We all know that basic dog grooming or cat grooming is a necessary evil, but do we give our animals all that they deserve? Do we even know what kind of dog grooming supplies we need? Why own a pet at all if we are not going to love and care for it properly? There are so many animal facilities available, both stationary and mobile, there is absolutely no excuse for an unkempt animal. Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, horse or other animal you care for it is imperative that they get the attention they deserve.

Admittedly there are a few owners that go way overboard when it comes to their pets. There are places that will provide exercise and socialization, spa treatments and even birthday parties. Some owners think of their pet as a family member and indulge them unmercifully. When it comes to cucumber facial masks and aromatherapy that may be taking things a bit too far, but that is an owner’s exclusive right or privilege. However, this article is not concerned with overindulgence, but with the basic necessity of rabbit , horse or cat grooming plus shih tzu, poodle or other types of dog grooming. A well-groomed animal is much easier to love.

So exactly what does pet grooming involve? What type of dog grooming products do we need? The basics to cat or dog grooming, and even the job to groom other animals for that matter, is simple. It boils down to a shower, shave and a haircut along with a couple of other easy procedures. Obviously, keeping your animal’s hair the proper length is very important for its appearance. This can involve either cutting or brushing the hair. Some pets never need a cut while others look much better with an occasional clipping. With some animals regular brushing will be enough to keep the hair nice and neat.

Bathing is another important step in keeping your pet groomed properly. This is a simple matter of hosing them down, rubbing in some shampoo and then rinsing them off. This can be done in a tub or outside with a garden hose. With regular bathing and brushing 90 percent of the chore is done. The other main ingredients to successfully keeping your pet looking its best are using clippers for clipping nails and possibly a little flea control. There is not much more to it than that. Sure, it is possible to spend a lot more time and money on mobile pet grooming, pet grooming supplies, oiling down the coat, tools, products and other extravagances, but it is not really necessary. Now if you have a show animal on the other hand it becomes a whole new ball game. But the basics are simple, wash, cut or brush, clip and flea control.

If you are the lazy type or just do not have enough time to spend on this job it is a simple matter of finding a mobile pet grooming company that will do the job for you. Or even a dog grooming school. Of course you will pay more, but if having your animal look its best is important to you this is certainly a consideration. If you are going to do the work yourself you might want to search for some online instructions, videos or tips.

You cannot predict when knowing something extra about pet grooming will come in handy. If you learned anything new in this article, you should file the article where you can find it again. As your knowledge about pet grooming continues to grow, you will begin to see how important of a subject this really is.

Adopt a Greyhound! They Are Docile and Great With Children!

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Did you know that Greyhounds are the only canine mentioned in the Holy Scriptures? (Proverbs 30:29-31).

This breed dates back to ancient history for Pharaohs rated Greyhounds first amongst all animals, both as pets and hunters. Paintings of dogs similar to today’s Greyhound existed over 4,000 years ago.

History indicates that the breed arrived in England over 3,500 years ago and Greyhound’s link with nobility was recorded at around 1014 when king Canute enacted the Forest Laws which stated only noblemen could own and hunt with Greyhounds.

The Greyhound was imported to America around late 1800s to assist farmers in the Jackrabbit control, which was the culprit for destruction of crops.

Originally hunting dogs and later racing dogs. The first circular racing track opened in 1919 in Emeryville, California and the racing industry in America was on its way…

A Greyhounds life begins after a 60 day gestation period. About two months after birth the litter, which ranges from 5 to 9 pups, is ready to to begin exercising their legs. At 3 months old, these pups are given an identifying tattoo and owners must register them with the National Greyhound Association, in Abilene, Kansas.

Typically at 14-16 months of age, adequate training has been completed and a Greyhound is placed at a racing kennel to begin their racing career. Pups are generally kept together in litters til about the age of one year, at which time they are transferred to a training kennel, where they establish a running pattern, fast or slow-breaker, pacesetter etc…

Although I do not agree with racing of Greyhounds, it is a reality, and I am glad that humane organizations such as the Greyhound Pets of America look after these animals after their retirement and look for loving homes where they can be placed and live the rest of their retired lives.

I was a Greyhound owner and wish I had many acres of land and a big house, so I could adopt dozens of Greyhounds and give them the love they deserve. Unfortunately I am not able to, so I encourage you, if you are thinking about adopting a dog, to stop by your local GPA chapter and see for yourself how docile, intelligent, loving this breed is. They make great pets for children!

Many vets often say Greyhounds make the best patients and I often laugh when I think of the saying that Greyhounds are a 45m/h couch potato! :O)

If not ready to adopt, pass this on to someone who may be thinking about it and if you can, make a donation to the GPA. They are committed to placing every dog, they are never put to sleep and their volunteers are a very dedicated group.

My little Ally is no longer with us. She lived a long 13 years, raced for 3 years or so, had two litters and lived the rest of her retired days happy and loved.

Dog Ear Problems – What Can Go Wrong and How To Care For Them

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

A dog’s sense of smell is known to be acute, but don’t discount his sense of hearing! A dog’s hearing is crucial, and if he develops infections or can’t hear properly, you not only deprive him of all the delicious sounds in your house and neighborhood but you prevent him communicating properly with other dogs too.

When giving your dog a weekly check, you should make sure his ears are perky and healthy. Deafness in your dog can point to an infection or illness. It’s a good idea to get your dog used to have his ears examined regularly, so incorporate this into your routine with him as early as possible.

Areas to concentrate on when looking your dog over, is to check the outside flap for cuts, bits caught in the fur, sore places, abscesses and infections. This task is made simpler in sleek dogs with shorter fur as any cuts are easily observed. For breeds of dogs that have longer fur and ears, you might have to be more meticulous when examining his ears. For instance, dogs with longer ears like the spaniels require that you tease the fur out carefully to check the skin hidden beneath the fur before any cuts or blood blisters from scraps with other animals can be observed.

Pay attention to the ear canal by gently drawing it backwards and upwards so as to get a good view towards the eardrum. Check to see if the ear canal seems to be wet or shows signs of inflammation that require a vet’s attention.

Tiny white mites and parasites can plague dogs. If mites are present you may notice a black, crusty exudate which is the telltale sign of mite infestation. Mites feed on earwax and the resulting debris harbours bacteria. Over time, this leads to inflammation and infection of the ear canal. To get rid of the mites, you will need to obtain an antibiotic treatment from your vet. The course of treatment would last for three weeks to catch the mites at all stages of their development.

Wash your dog’s ear gently with a mixture of warm water and an ear wash solution recommended by your vet. It is important to remove as much moisture as you can by drying his ears adequately, as moisture encourages the growth of bacteria. Dissolve a few drops of a prescribed insecticide in some carrier oil and use the oil to massage the ear gently so that the oil gets in contact with the inner reaches of the canal. This is to be done once a week and after two weeks, your dog should have a clean ear and won’t be shaking his head or trying to scratch it.

Never put Q-tips or anything similar down the ear canal to dig out any ear wax - you may well damage the lining of the ears or puncture his eardrum. You should pay attention to chronic ear infections, as it could be a sign of allergies or other problems. If washing and cleaning alone don’t help alleviate the problem, it would be advisable to let your vet deal with it.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

One of the most common questions dog owners are forced to address is how to train a dog not to bark.

Dogs love to bark. It’s a perfectly natural thing for your dog to do, just as it’s normal for us humans to speak.

It’s when our dogs bark excessively that it becomes a problem for all concerned - including our neighbours.

Considering this, our goal isn’t to to stop our dogs from barking, but rather how to control the excessive barking.

There are of course situations when we want our dogs to bark (and I guess there are also times when I like my chatty aunty to speak!;)

Training our dogs to stop or at least reduce their barking habit can be a very difficult task.

The first step in modifying this problem is to determine the reason why your dog is barking in the first place. Once you’ve identified the cause or trigger, you can then plan your
training solution.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

To express their needs (being bossy).

Some dogs are bred to bark (some terriers and hounds).

They are staking out their territory.

To alert other members of their pack (that’s you and your family) of impending danger.

When playing, just through sheer excitement.

Barking at other animals. Depending on where you are in the world, it could be squirrels
or any other small animal.

If they are isolated.

Some dogs bark excessively when separated from their pack (you and your family).

If they are trapped behind some type of barrier like a fence or window.

Just for fun!

To express dominance (puppies normally test you out at some stage with a display of dominance barking).

They bark because their owners have inadvertently rewarded excessive barking in the past (this is crucial to understand).

Through boredom or a lack of physical and mental stimulation.

May feel stressed or uncomfortable for some reason. Things like feeling threatened or if they don’t have an appropriate place to sleep can cause excessive barking problems.

Dogs that haven’t been properly socialized often become nuisance barkers.

May be looking for a response or some attention from their pack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even though it may appear to you that your dog is barking at nothing, this is not necessarily the case. This is due to the fact that your dog
has a much more acute sense of hearing, smell and sight than us humans. Your dogs excessive barking is probably being triggered by something.

How To Stop Your Dog From Barking

Ok, now we’ve sorted out the reason for your dogs barking problem, we can put some training techniques in place to control it.

The most important piece of advice to remember when trying to modify any dog behavioral problem, is to clearly communicate to your dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

One of the biggest mistakes us dog owners make is to inadvertently reward our dogs excessive barking. We actually encourage and reinforce the barking problem when we commit these three dog training sins:

Yell and scream at the dog - this just gives them the attention they were crying out for.

Let them inside. If your dog is barking his head off outside, then you let him in, this just rewards the barking.

If your dog is barking and you react by giving him a comforting cuddle or a treat of some sort, you are definitely encouraging your dog to bark again. By doing this you are communicating to your dog that you are happy with him. You should be making it clear that his excessive barking is inappropriate.

Right, lets get stuck into some proven techniques to stop your dog from barking. I’ve listed the most common reasons why your dog may be barking, and some suggested solutions you can try.

Dog Goes Crazy Every Time The Phone Rings

This is a very common and annoying time for dogs to bark excessively. Try these training techniques:

Never yell at your dog.

Get your dog used to the phone ringing, don’t make it such a big deal. Ring your home number from your cell phone or get a friend to keep calling you. When the phone rings just sit there, don’t say or do a thing. Repeat this process over a few days, your dog will probably continue to bark for a while but will give up before long.

If you give your dog basic obedience training, behavioral problems such as excessive barking are easily controlled. Your dog looks up to you as their pack leader and is eager to please you in any situation. Teaching the Quiet! or Stop! obedience training command will soon correct nuisance barking problems.

You may have some success by changing the tone and volume of your ring tone.

Dog Barks When You Are Not Home

I’m not going to pretend this type of barking will be easy for you to control, because in reality it is often a difficult and lengthy process.

Always remember that dogs are social creatures, when they are separated from their pack (you) they can become stressed and frustrated. This type of excessive barking is often caused by separation anxiety.

Firstly I’d say just use your common sense and get these dog ownership basics right. Keep your dog well exercised (physical and mental) and provide fresh water, chewing toys and a nice comfortable place to sleep. You can also try to block your dogs view of the street or other distractions. Basically, make sure your dog is happy.

If you know your dog has been barking while you have been away, you must ignore him for a while when you return home. I understand this is difficult for lots of owners, but otherwise your dog believes that his barking is the reason you came back home to him. Just go about your business for a little while when you get home, ignoring your dog. When your dog has settled down, you then initiate contact with him.

This next method takes time and patience, but can be a very effective way to stop your dog from barking. It’s based on that important rule applicable to all training situations.
Praise or reward when your dog does something good, create a negative association when he does something bad. Leave the house as you normally would, but just hide somewhere nearby. When your dog starts to bark spray him with water or throw a tin can full of coins or rocks in his direction (this is the negative association). Try to keep out of your dogs sight while doing this if possible. Go and hide again, if he is quiet for a while, go in and reward his good behavior with some praise and maybe a treat. This process may need to be repeated over and over until you have broken the excessive barking habit.

The above techniques have proven to be successful with my own dogs, but if they don’t work for you, maybe you could try a Citronella Collar. Again this method uses the power of negative association. Every time your dog barks, a fine mist of citronella is sprayed into the air. Most dogs hate the smell, and soon realise if they don’t bark, the smell isn’t there to bother them. If you have more than one dog this method is not a suitable solution.

Dog Barks For Attention Or To Demand Something

This is one excessive barking problem that can be corrected very quickly.

If you establish yourself as the pack leader or alpha dog in your owner-dog relationship, this type of barking problem won’t occur. You’ll also form a strong bond with your dog based on trust and respect.

Another effective method you can try to stop this attention barking is simply ignoring your dog. Your dog will probably become frustrated and bark alot initially, but once he realizes that it is not getting him anywhere, he will stop. This training method can be hard on the ears for a while!

Dog Barks At Passers By

Workers like the Postman and Delivery Driver’s are constantly being barked at throughout their day.

Your dog perceives these type of people as intruders or a threat to their territory. The dog then barks and every time he barks he is rewarded, as the intruder goes away. Your dog is then very pleased that he has averted this threat, which leads him to do it again and again. His behavior is reinforced and therefore this can be a difficult problem to turn around.

If possible, you could try to block your dogs vision or access to the area where these people pass by.

Dog obedience training is the best solution to this type of excessive barking. Once you have your dog properly obedience trained, you will be able to communicate to him that this is unacceptable behavior.

If your dog consistently barks at a particular person, you may need this person to help modify your dogs behavior. Just say your dog gets really agitated each time the postman
arrives. Have a chat to your postman and give him some of your dogs very favorite treats. Each time he delivers to your house, he can also deliver a tasty treat to your dog. In your dogs mind the postman goes from being a threat, to a welcome guest.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark

In extreme cases of excessive barking, where all else has failed, some people advocate debarking surgery. I’ve never needed to go down this path with any of my dogs, and don’t think I ever would. But if you have come to the end of the line and think you have run out of options, you could discuss debarking surgery with your Veterinarian.

Good luck in trying to control your dog’s excessive barking. If you consistently apply the above training techniques and add a little patience, you should have your dog under control before long.

The Old English Sheepdog: The “Bobtail”

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The sight of the Old English Sheepdog actually driving a flock of sheep or cattle is not unusual in Great Britain but is not often seen in the United States, where he has become more popular as a show dog and a family pet. In Great Britain, the dogs used commonly as drovers dogs, draft dogs and shepherds in years past were considered “working dogs” . Because of the tax which was levied on dogs who performed no “work” , the custom of bobbing the tail was begun to distinguish the dogs who “worked” from dogs who were used only for companionship. Dogs with the docked tail were also spoken of as “Bobtails” and this name became associated with the Old English Sheepdog. In truth many of these dogs are born without a tail.

In years past the Old English was shown in a more natural appearance than it is today. The Exhibitors in the ring today do an excessive amount of back combing, fluffing, spraying and “chalking” (a practice of brushing fine chalk powder into the coat to whiten it and to give it an appearance of “body” ) and the dog has become so overdone that it presents an entirely different picture than it is in everyday life. If the coat is not cared for on a daily basis it is going to be nothing but a shaggy coat, unkempt and quite straggly, like the sheep whom it protects. A pet owner who becomes taken with the show appearance of this breed soon finds out that they must brush at least twice a week or give in and get the dog shaved. This solution is never good for the dog since it can lead to sunburn or skin irritations.

The A.K.C. standard says that the dog should stand 21-22 inches at the shoulder “and upwards” of that size. His appearance when he is done up for the show is impressive and he appears to be much heavier of bone and substance than he is when his coat is not excessively “pouffed”. The Old English is a Drovers dog, first and foremost and should have the structure and endurance to perform this work for long periods of time. The dog should stand taller at the rump than at the withers and this is a distinguishing characteristic of the breed. The hair is so profuse over the face that often the eyes are not visible unless the hair is pulled back and fastened with a barrette, which is not allowed in the show ring.

The Old English is a steady and reliable dog, reserved in affection for strangers and often overly boisterous with his family. He will not be a “watchdog”. Although he will bark, he is as a general rule polite with strangers. This is a dog who makes a big and gentle companion for children. The Old English is said to be the “Nana” in the story of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. This fits the description of the Old English in a household, for he is a gentle and loving protector of the children in his “flock”.

Cat Litters: Fragrance-Free Alternatives

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Plain clay cat litters do a terrible job when it comes to odor control. Living in a small house with four cats using plain clay litter is not fun, unless you happen to like the smell of cat pee. I don’t.

Clumping clay litter is out of the question. Bentonite clay turns into concrete when it gets wet, thus the clumps. When cats lick bentonite from their paws or inhale the dust, it can cause fatal bowel and lung obstructions. Clumping cat litters have killed entire litters of kittens and cost many cats their health, and even their lives. Excavating clay from quarries for cat litter also causes a lot of environmental damage.

The problems with clay started me on a quest for the perfect cat litter. It had to be:

Fragrance-free, because fragrance chemicals are toxic to people and pets

Soft-clumping or non-clumping

A texture my cats would like

Long-lasting

Relatively inexpensive

Note: All but one of the following litters are available at Petsmart:

I tried the alfalfa pellet litter. OK odor control. My cats disliked the feel of the pellets intensely and wouldn’t use it. Ditto for wood pellet litter.

Yesterday’s News: Absolutely terrible odor control, stayed wet and soggy, had to be changed after 2-3 days. It’s as bad as clay, except for its environmental impact.

ExquisiCat Crystals: (Plus) Silica beads provide great odor control. Long-lasting, stays dry, easy to clean the boxes, nice reusable plastic containers.

(Minus) Expensive, some cats aren’t wild about the texture, and the beads are hard to sweep up. For the rest of your life you’ll be stepping on hard little beads that hurt your bare feet.

Swheat Scoop: (Plus) Made from wheat bran, the cats loved the texture. Wonderful odor control, soft clumps that are flushable, very long lasting. Works great!

(Minus) Somewhat expensive. One of my cats developed allergic asthma attacks from it. As soon as I switched to a pine-based litter his asthma went away. Wheat has a lot of fungal mycotoxins which could have caused his allergy. If my cat hadn’t developed an allergy to it, I would never have thought of the mycotoxin issue.

Corn Litters e.g. World’s Best Cat Litter: Haven’t tried them, don’t want to. Corn has a lot of mycotoxins.

LuvLitters at luvlitters.com: Wood pellets that have been kiln-dried and don’t have any irritating pine or cedar oils. (Plus) Great odor control, very long lasting, easy scooping, stays dry. Reasonable price given how long it lasts.

(Minus) Not available locally, must be ordered online. Some cats don’t like the feel of the pellets at first, but once the pellets break down they’re OK with it.

ExquisiteCat Advanced Scoop Paper Formula: This one gets the gold star! It looks and feels like clay. Wonderful odor control, light-weight, very long-lasting. Soft clumps, easy scooping, very affordable. The cats love it; I love it. Highly recommended!

Tips on Sexing Discus Fish

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Do you have some adult discus fish and want to know whether they are male or female. In this article I’m going to share with you some of the tips and techniques you can use to determine the gender of your discus or those you wish to buy.

First of all, know that these are only guides and they are not always 100% correct as in some circumstances females have male characteristics and males have female ones.

Here are ways to determine the sex of your discus

1, The dorsal and anal fins

Take a good look at the dorsal and anal fins of your discus. Are they rounded or are they pointed. Males tend to have pointed dorsal and anal fins or sometimes have extended growth on the end rear of the dorsal fin. Females tend to have rounds rear fins.

2, The colour and pattern of your discus

Please look at the colour and pattern of your discus fish, compare them to one another in the tank. Some fish will hopefully have more intense colour and some discus will have more pattern. Male discus fish tend to have less intense colour but have more pattern while the female tends to be more colourful but with lesser pattern.

3, Size of the discus

Compare the size of your discus. Male discus tend to be bigger than the females but the size can also depend on whether the fish was stunted or are just small in genetic make up.

I hope these three tips have helped you to sex your discus and will help you when selecting adult discus fish from a shop or dealer.

Snowy White American Eskimo

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

The American Eskimo is one of the most intelligent and trainable of the dog breeds. This dog was frequently used as a performer in traveling circuses. The dog is strikingly beautiful with a snowy white coat.

This member of the American Kennel Club’s non-sporting group was originally known as the American Spitz. This breed is descended from several strains of European dogs that came to the United States with their German owners.

Some of their descendents are Pomeranians and the German Spitz. These dogs come in three sizes, the toy, the miniature and the standard. There is an American Eskimo to fit any size house or dog lover’s preference.

A thick double coat covers the dog. There is a ruff around their necks. The dog also has a graceful, full tail that curls over their backs. The small, erect ears give them the appearance of being always on the alert. A black nose, black-rimmed eyes and black mouth provide a striking contrast with the breed’s snowy white coat.

The American Eskimo needs plenty of exercise. Be prepared to take your dog for nice log walks twice a day. This level of exercise will keep the dog lively and happy. The American Eskimo can live comfortably in an apartment or town home.

This breed is a perfect choice for a family with small children. With a playful, naughty personality, the American Eskimo enjoys the company of children and their friends.

The American Eskimo loves human interaction. This breed is not happy spending too much time alone. Doggie daycare is an option to keep the dog active and involved with other dogs to provide company.

The American Eskimo will benefit from dog obedience classes. The American Eskimo is so intelligent that he will enjoy the structured training and will probably want to go to more advanced classes.

Some of the common health problems of the American Eskimo include:

Joint degeneration
Hip dysplasia
Seizures

Hip dysplasia is often a hereditary problem. You should consult the breeder for information on the level of screening for the parents. Seizures are also a concern for this

The thick coat needs to be groomed once per week to remove loose hair and debris. Pay special attention to the toenails to be sure they are wearing down naturally. The American Eskimo is not only strikingly beautiful but a smart and loyal family pet.

Housebreaking Your Puppy

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Housebreaking your puppy is going to take a lot of patience. As soon as you bring your puppy home, you should begin to housebreak it. With puppies, nature calls about 6 times a day. You should take your puppy out immediately after each meal, as this is the time that it is most likely to need to relieve itself.

A puppy is not able to fully control its bladder until the age of twelve weeks. Up until that age, good housebreaking routines should be followed in order to avoid your dog relieving itself in your house.

Watch for signs that your puppy has to go out, including walking around in circles. That is the biggest sign that your dog needs to go outside to relieve itself.

Confining your puppy to a small area of the house, or using a crate are a couple of good ways to make sure your dog doesn’t end up defecating or urinating all over your house. Housebreaking your puppy is a lot harder if it smells urine in a part of your house that you don’t want it relieving itself in.

When housebreaking your dog, it is important to make sure that your dog knows when it is doing wrong, and knows what it is doing wrong. It’s no help scolding your dog for urinating on the floor if it’s not clear to the dog why you’re scolding him. Be firm, yet gentle, especially until your puppy knows better.

It is important to housebreak your puppy properly the first time, or you’ll be regretting it for years to come. If it’s not a hundred percent clear to your dog that it is not ok to urinate in the house, then you will be cleaning up a lot of messes over the course of your dog’s lifetime.

Information on proper housebreaking methods can be obtained from your vet, dog trainers, or on the internet. Do your homework ahead of time, before you bring your new puppy home, because the housebreaking needs to start immediately, as soon as your puppy gets home. You don’t want to be fumbling around, trying to learn how to housebreak your puppy while he’s urinating all over your house. Put yourself in the position of knowing how to do it before you bring your puppy home.
