Dachshund - The “Weiner Dog” Breed Description

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Dachshunds originated in Germany and are known to have existed as far back as the 16th century. Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers, wild boar and other types of small animals. In German, Dachs means badger and Hund means dog, showing the emphasis the breeding pattern had on the hunting of the badger.

Dachshunds have a fearless kind of attitude about them handed down from their ancestry of hunting. The original breed was quite large compared to the CKC/AKC standards of today, averaging 30 to 40 pounds. Eventually this size was branched off into smaller categories for individual hunting of smaller prey such as a fox or rabbit.

Dachshunds are unique in that they were used to actually hunt their prey under ground, following it into its hole - killing and retrieving it for their reward.

Today you will find two sizes of Dachshunds, the miniature and the standard. According to the ckc.ca Canadian Kennel Club and akc.org American Kennel Club “miniatures are not a separate classification but compete in a class division for “11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older.” Weight of the standard size is usually between 16 and 32 pounds.”

There are three varieties to the coat that a Dachshund is bred with:

Smooth
Wire-haired
Long-haired

The Dachshund is known for its huge variance in patterns and colours of coat - an explanation of which could be a lengthy discussion on its own. The two most common colours - popularized by modern day TV and books are the red(most popular) and the black and tan.

Dachshunds have enjoyed immense popularity over the years resulting in both the good and bad that comes with this. The only time that Dachshunds have fell into a lack of popularity was during World War I, when the Dachshund was used as a symbol of the Germans in Allied propaganda material.

Overall the Dachshund is a clever courageous dog that has added to humanities existence in uncountable ways. They have a unique personality that leans towards fierce loyalty and fearless friendliness, often leaving dogs of larger stature taken aback.

Handy Dandy Arthritis Treatments for Dogs

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

So your dog has arthritis?

Well, even though it is hard to hear, you must realize that you are not alone. Arthritis in dogs is one of the most common sources of chronic pain the veterinarians treat in their clinics today. Research seems to indicate that one in every five adult dogs is hammered with arthritis and the pain that goes along with it.

If your pet is suffering from arthritis you may see some signs that your pup is favoring one leg more than the other, she may sleep more, or seem to have more trouble standing for sitting. If your dog has arthritis you might also notice that she is more hesitant to climb stairs, run or jump. It may even seem that her joints seem sore or that she has no interest in playing. In some cases, dogs with arthritis also begin to show signs of weight gain.

If you are concerned that your dog may be suffering from arthritis, then it is quite important that you take your pet in to see the vet for an accurate screening and diagnosis. With an appropriate diagnosis, the treatment for dog arthritis is quite similar to arthritis treatment for humans.

For dogs suffering with arthritis, regular exercise is important to help maintain a proper body weight. NSAIDS or non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are the most common form of pharmaceutical arthritis treatments for your dog. Over-the counter dog arthritis treatments such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, omega fatty acids and Boswellin may also be prescribed by your veterinarian.

Glucosamine absorbs and releases water with each step, acting as a shock absorber for the joints. It also stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans, important proteins found in cartilage, which helps to slow the deterioration of joints and ease your dog’s arthritis pain.

Chondroitin attracts fluids into proteoglycan molecules which draws nutrients into the cartilage and increases the flow of fluid into the cartilage which adds resiliency. Chondroitin also helps protect existing cartilage from premature degeneration and provides structure and flexibility to the joints. Giving more life to your doggy’s joints.

Other options for medications for arthritis include Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which are constituents of fish oils. These fatty acids act as anti-inflammatory agents helping to further reduce the pain from inflammation.

Boswellin may also be recommended by your vet for its ability to improve the blood supply to the joints and maintain the integrity of blood vessels. It is also known for helping to improve mobility in stiff joints by reducing swelling. Less swelling, less pain for your best friend.

While there are varying arthritis treatments for dogs you will need to talk with your vet to determine the best course of action for you’re your pet. Some therapies may take a few weeks to completely work, so don’t get discouraged. Seek the best treatment for your pet, after all isn’t that what they deserve!

Arthritis treatment for your dog is too important to ignore and if your dog is suffering, then she deserves your full attention and the most comprehensive treatment plan that your vet can design.

No dog should suffer needlessly, so if arthritis is slowing your pet down make the call to your vet today to screen your dog for arthritis.

Birds - Truly Amazing Creatures

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Birds are truly amazing creatures and for bird watchers, birds become a fascinating hobby. Bird watching can be done almost anywhere and whether you live in the city or in the beautiful country surrounded by trees and fields there are birds everywhere for the watching. Nevertheless, you may be more successful at watching birds if you know where to look and what to look for. Below, you will find some tips for bird watching.

The most important thing to remember when you are watching birds is that you do not infringe on the rights of others. Just because you see a bird you have never seen before in someone’s yard, don’t move into the person’s yard without permission to have a closer look. It is important that you always consider the environment you are in when you are birding. Also take into consideration how other people will feel. There are plenty of opportunities to see every species of bird native to the area, so relax, have fun, and be considerate.

Next, when birding, you may want to pick up a bird watching guide. A bird watching guide can advise you about all of the different species of bird that is indigenous to the area you are birding in. Bird guides can teach you about the different species, what the birds look like and where you can find a specific bird. You may also find that certain species of bird are nocturnal and you can only see them in the evening, thus a bird guide is a good thing to have.

One of the most important tools that a bird watcher can have is a set of good binoculars. You will want to get binoculars that can allow you to see great distances. With binoculars you can get a close look at a bird’s coloring and you can even see them high in the treetops or across the fields and waterways. Again, just make sure that you honor other people’s right to privacy when you are birding.

Always wear appropriate attire when you are birding and if you do decide to take a walk through the woods in the country it is best that you make someone, anyone, aware of your whereabouts. Don’t just go off into the wilderness without notifying someone. Think and act safely when you are birding. You may want to buy a map of the area you are birding in and you may also want to invest in a small compass so that you do not get lost in an unfamiliar area. Better yet, talk to someone who really knows the area in which you plan to go birding. You never know, they may even be able to recommend a good area to see different species of birds. The bottom line is, be careful, ask questions, then have some fun!

These are rewards and reinforcements ,besides treats petting and praising. With a new puppy dog get down low during the petting and praising reinforcements. Also he or she should know that your the leader of the pack. When speaking the commands you need to be confident, but no need hit or scare him. I am a avid dog lover who enjoys being outside with my dogs to run FREE, and still have the reassurance that they will stay close to me. I currently have one Doberman, Constance Casey and one min-pin, Little Cheater. It is amazing the little things you teach and did not realize it. Like for example, Little Cheater if I wanted to leave a room quietly, but get him to come. I would make a clicking sound. Both Little Cheater and Constance Casey have learned to come by that sound. I am not a professional, but if you want to learn more on Puppy and Dog obedience Training. Check out rttopreviews.com

My name is Tim Wood, 51. I’ve always been an animal lover. In my school years we raised calves and ponies. We enjoyed naming each one of them. The calves were so young that we fed them off of buckets. We raced the ponies with carts behind them. My first pet was a dog named Tippy and a cat named Mary Poppins. Tippy I got from the pound, she knew that I was the one that she had to please if she wanted to go home with us. Animals can be so amazing. So all my life I’ve been around animals. Knowing that there would always be a time in my life that they would be around. I have always tried to enforce that proper care and training is important when taking on a new pet.

Changing from horses to horse power and took our street cars to the drag strip. I also still enjoy cars and street rods. I was lucky to have these hobbies while I was single. I got married in my late 30’s and also became a dad of 3 girls. In August it will have been 17 years. Without the support of God I don’t think my life would’ve been so blessed. How To Breed Angelfish

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Over the past 10 years, people have asked me many questions on how to breed angelfish.

Anyway, I started to write down questions on how to breed angel fish for the past few years. And just recently, I decided to type them out and let everyone see them.

Sometimes the answers may seem very common sense… but that’s how to breed angel fish. You see, angelfish aren’t complicated. In fact, the more simple you keep your set up, the water changes and feeding, the easier it is going to be for your angelfish.

And you know what?

Angelfish can breed on their own! You see, sometimes we think we have to do all the work for angelfish to breed.

But angel fish still have their wild instinct. (And lucky for us, it hasn’t been bred out of them!)

So here they are… Questions that people have asked on How to breed angelfish.

For you to enjoy.

How to breed angel fish

What are the growth stages of Angel Fish?
• Egg - 0 to 60 hours
• Wigglers - From hatching to free Swimming - Depending on the
temperature, this usually occurs on the 7th Day
• Fry - From free swimming to taking the form of an Angelfish
• Juveniles - When they take on the appearance of an angelfish
• Adults - Usually around 9-12 months once they are at breeding stage

How can I tell male angelfish from female angelfish?
There are some subtle differences that an experienced angelfish breeder can use to help identify mature males and females. Some angelfish enthusiasts say that the angle of the anal fin in relation to the belly of the angelfish, will identify the sex. Others say that some male angels may have a hump on the crown and some may be larger than the females. There seems to be too many ways of telling them apart, but none seem to be 100% correct. These differences do not exist on immature angelfish, all of the time. Therefore, the only sure way to tell the difference between mature males from mature females is to examine the breeding tubes during spawning. The female’s breeding tube is wider and more blunt than the male’s.

Does the pecking order change when a pair is formed?
Normally the pecking order will stay as it is until a pair is formed. Once a male and female form a pair, then it does change everything in the tank. The pair will normally be aggressive in defending their territory. The pecking order will be no more. At this time, it would be good idea to either remove the pair from the tank, or the other fish from it.

Can two different types of angelfish breed?
Yes they can. Whether it is black, koi, golden, silver etc, they will spawn with
any other type of angel. That is how new varieties are created. It will not
matter if they have standard fins, veils or super veils, pearl scales, blushing or not.

I have two angles now, so how do I tell if they are male or female?
Depending on the size of the angelfish now, it may take some time before you can tell their sex. The only real way of telling whether you have a male or female is by waiting for them to spawn. At that time, you will be able to see their breeding tube. The female’s tube is blunt and much larger than the male’s. Their breeding tubes can be said to be like a pencil. The female has a blunt tube, while the male has something similar to the tip of the pencil, shorter and pointy. During spawning, the female’s lower body will thicken as she starts to produce eggs.

Can I get a pair of angels from keeping two angels?
With only two angels it is hard to get a pair. It has been done, but getting five or six angels and growing them up gives you a better chance for a pair. The chances of getting at least one pair from six angelfish is 95%.

I do not want to breed angelfish. What should I do?
If you are keeping your angelfish in a community tank, then another fish will generally eat the eggs when the lights go out. Sometimes, the parents will eat them once it gets dark. If you get parents that are protective enough to hatch their eggs in a community environment, there is still a chance that they do not survive. Breeding angelfish is not rocket science, but it is not that simple either.

What size do you sell baby angels at?
The answer to this will depend on what size the fish store wants to purchase
them at. Some places won’t buy them unless they are quarter size in body.
Some will buy them at dime to nickel size. Normally, fish stores will take them when they are nickel size. When they are small, their immune system is still growing. As there is more chance that they may not survive when they are smaller, the fish stores will only buy them when they are a reasonable size.

What is reasonable will depend on your fish store.
What can I do to make sure the youngsters grow quickly to their adult
size? What food should I feed them and how often should they be fed?
There are several choices of quality foods. A color and growth flake from
Angels Plus is a good choice. Also frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms may
help them grow quickly. Depending on the size they are now, you might have to feed them 3 to 4 times a day. The problem with this is that the more you feed them, the more strain you put on your tank when it comes to waste. You will need to make sure you constantly do water changes.

When do angelfish reach adult size?
They normally reach adult size at around 10 to 12 months.

What’s the correct size to breed angelfish in?
Generally speaking, a 20 gallon tank is considered to be adequate to breed a pair of angelfish.

What about a fry tank? What’s a good size for them?
Again, a 20 gallon tank may be sufficient for fry. In saying this, you need to
make sure that you maintain high water quality. Once they get a little bigger, you will need to get yourself a grow out tank.

What size and how old before angelfish start pairing up?
Angelfish will begin breeding more by age than by size. Depending on the
tank, a pair of angelfish may form around 8 to 12 months. You may find that you get a pair earlier than this, while other times, you may find that they pair up later than 12 months.

How big are angelfish eggs?
They are the size of a pinhead.

What happens during the first week once they laid their eggs?
If the female has deposited her eggs, and the male fertilizes them, the
following should occur;
Day 0: The eggs are spawned in lines.
Day 1: Any infertile eggs will turn white.
Day 2: More eggs may turn white and fall to the bottom of the tank.
Some eggs may have fungus on them, which turns them fuzzy.
Today, wiggling tails may emerge from clear eggs.
Day 3: Tadpole shape forms with large yolk sack, fry remain stuck to
the slate.
Day 4: Small eyes begin to form. The fry will survive on their yoke sacs.
There is no need to feed them yet.
Day 5: Eyes grow larger, yolk sack shrinks. Today, you will need to
start your baby brine shrimp hatchery.
Day 6: Some fry are free swimming.
Day 7: Most of the fry should be free swimming. This is the time to start
feeding them baby brine shrimp.

If the female angelfish has been stressed, is it likely it will lay more
eggs?
There may be a chance that it will still spawn, but the healthy and less
stressed an angelfish is, the more chance that they have of spawning.

Songs About Cats (Or Are They?)

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Perhaps the most famous Cat Song is The Siamese Cat Song recorded by Peggy Lee. The song is from the Walt Disney 1955 classic “The Lady and The Tramp”, an animated film about a classy Cocker Spaniel named Lady who falls for Tramp a scamp of a mongrel. The song however is about two arrogant cats, Si and Am, who have given Siamese cats a bad name ever since.

The Siamese Cat Song was penned by Lee along with Sonny Burke and over the years has also been recorded by Freddie and The Dreamers, Mitch Miller, Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, Haylie Duff, and Bobby McFerrin. “We are Siamese if you please, We are Siamese if you don’t please.”

Both The Turtles and Petula Clark stepped into recording studios to make very different versions of The Cat in the Window, a song that compares a cat trying to get out of a window with the singer wanting to fly away. “There’s a cat in the window, and he’s watching all the birds go passing by, he’d love to fly out the window, go where the wind goes, and so would I.”

Who can forget the Muppets recording of The Cat Came Back, a song about a kitty that just kept finding its way back no matter how far it was taken from home. “But the cat came back, she wouldn’t stay away, she was sitting on the porch the very next day.”

In 1950 folks were flooding into record stores and asking for I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat. Mel Blanc recorded the song, written by Alan Livingston, Billy May and Warren Foster, about the cartoon cat and canary duo Sylvester and Tweety. “I tawt I taw a puddy tat a creeping up on me, I did I taw a puddy tat as plain as he could be.”

The Rooftop Singers followed up their 1963 number one hit Walk Right In, with Tom Cat a ditty about ‘Ringtail Tom’ who liked to go “strutting round the town” “And when he steps out all the other cats in the neighborhood they begin to shout.” Fast forward to 1981 and the Stray Cats record a musically different song but with a very similar theme, the rockabilly Stray Cat Strut. “Stray cat strut, I’m a ladies’ cat, a feline Casanova, hey man, that’s where it’s at, get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man, get my dinner from a garbage can.”

Norma Tanega apparently owned a cat that she named ‘Dog’ and liked to take that
cat for walks, hence her 1966 hit Walking My Cat Named Dog, which does seem to be about her real life experience of strolling around town with her pet feline.

Most songs though that include the word Cat in the tile, are not truly about cats at all. A great example is the fine song, Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. No cats make an appearance in this song; instead the lyrics contain a very chilling message that every dad should pay heed too.

Bent Fabric, real name Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, had a hit in 1962 with Alley Cat, but this was an instrumental recording so it’s not a song about cats. Instrumental too was Aaron Copeland’s The Cat and the Mouse.

Cat People (Putting Out Fire) by David Bowie was recorded for the 1982 remake of the film Cat People. Great dark and menacing feel to the song but the words have no relationship to cats.

The cat in The Cat Crept In, recorded by Mud was actually a girl, as was the cat featured in The Rolling Stones’ Stray Cat Blues, this one with exceedingly sharp claws.

They Call Her the Cat, by Elton John is about, well it’s not about cats! Neither is Honky Cat, another Elton tune, that one is about a country boy moving to live life in the city.

Three Cool Cats, is a song that was first recorded by the Coasters in 1958 and covered by The Beatles in 1962 (but not released until 1995.) Of course this song is not about cats, but about three teenage boys and three teenage girls. The Beatles also recorded Little Willie John’s Leave My Kitten Alone, no surprise to find that the song is not about a kitten.

U2 recorded a song titled An Cat Dubh, which apparently means The Black Cat in
Gaelic, no cat in the song though, black or otherwise.

No cats are in Year of the Cat by Al Stewart, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent,
The Lovecats by The Cure or in Cool for Cats by Squeeze. Who can say what The
Cat’s In the Well by Bob Dylan is about?

There must be countless other songs that have the words Cat, or Cats, in the title but are not actually about our feline friends. No doubt there are more songs that are about cats than those listed on this page, but those songs sadly seem few and far between.

But wait . . . wasn’t there a stage musical all about cats. Cats, the musical by
Andrew Lloyd Webber, was first shown in London, England in 1981. Based upon T.
S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats the show features song after song about . . . Old Gumbie, Grizabella, Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer, Skimbleshanks, Old Deuteronomy, Gus, Macavity, and Mr. Mistoffelees. All of these characters are, of course, . . . Cats.

Since you are looking for home made dog food recipes you probably already know the health risk included in serving your dog commercial dog food. I am not saying that all commercial dog food is bad but you have no control over what you are feeding your dog.

When you use tested recipes for home made dog food you have much more control over the ingredients included in your dogs’ diet. Just like humans a dog needs a menu with variations and when using home made dog food recipes you are in control of your dogs eating habits.

Before you start making your own dog food for your beloved dog it is important that you discuss it with your vet. Dogs do need several different nutrients to become healthy. Discussing your dogs’ new diet and your plans on what you will feed him will ensure you that your dog gets the proper food.

A dog meal should consist of a combination of meat, vegetables and carbohydrates like rice, potatoes or beans. In this article I will first give you a recipe for a home made dog meal and then a recipe for a home made dog treat. Your dog will probably be a little sceptical in the beginning, but when he got the taste for it he will be happier and healthier than ever.

Salmon Dinner

1 can of salmon without bones

1 egg beaten

3 tablespoons of cornmeal

1 potato

1 carrot

1 stick celery

Mix the salmon, cornmeal and eggs well and form them into patties. You then coat with some extra cornmeal. Then fry the patties in some canola oil until they are brown on both sides. Chop the patties into smaller pieces and stir them together with chopped and boiled vegetables.

Following this steps and you will have a simple yet healthy nutritious dinner for your dog. Remember to let the food cool a little before you give it to your dog. The next recipe is a dog treat that my dog loves more than anything. I can’t blame him. It contains bacon. The treat can be made while you are making your own bacon for yourself.

Dog Bacon Treat

1 1/2 C. Rye Flour

2 Tbls. Wheat Germ

2 Tsp. Baking Soda

1 1/2 Tbls. Vegetable Oil

3 Pieces Cooked and Crumbled Bacon

1 Egg Yolk

1/2 C. 2% Milk

2 Tbl. Honey

Preheat the oven up to 375 degrees. Put all the dry ingredients in a bowl and use a different bowl for all the wet ingredients and mix them together separately in each bowl. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ones. Knead into dough. Roll the dough out on a floured surface. Cut into shapes. Bake 20 minutes on greased cookie sheets. Let harden in oven overnight.

Still remember that treats are treats. You do not want to spoil your dog with treats.

If you want to start feeding your dog your own home made dog food it is important to have the right knowledge and the right recipes.

Eden Below The Waves - Planting Your Aquarium

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Just as trees, flowers and plants help our environment, add a food source and make our landscapes beautiful so too do aquatic plants provide the same for your aquarium.

Just like us fish like to have areas where they can swim around and nibble at, but plant life in the aquarium plays a much greater part in the aquatic environment.

Toxins in the water created by rotting food and fish excrement pollute and starve the water of vital oxygen. Remembering that the fish breathe water through their gills we know that it is vital to keep oxygen levels up in the tank. Aquatic plants will help the process and uses the phosphate created in the nitrogen cycle to help them grow.

So what is the nitrogen cycle? Just like on land the leaves, plant life and animal droppings rot and mulch down into a fertiliser. Plant roots take the fertiliser and use it as a feed. In the aquarium rotting foods, and fish waste falls to the bottom of the tank and turns into a fertiliser for the aquatic plants. In turn they produce oxygen through photosynthesis just as the trees and flowers do above water. More oxygen means that the fish can breathe healthy clean and safe water.

Aquatic plants also play an important part in the breeding process of fish. Some species lay their eggs beneath the leaves away from other predatory fish swimming around the plants to ward off fish from nearing them until the eggs hatch, the leafy plants then offer a good food source for the young fry and indeed many adult fish enjoy nibbling on the fresh leaves as much as we enjoy our garden vegetables..

Not only are aquatic plants important to the tank environment but offer an exciting landscape for you and your fish. Imagine walking through the countryside and seeing no trees, no flowers and plant life, pretty grim thought yes? In the same respect the underwater garden offers you the chance to create dramatic and stunning plant effects that will give you hours of watching pleasure as you see your fish happily swimming and enjoying the garden you have given them.

Different plants have different visual effects, look around your aquatic centre and ask for advice as some plants are hardier than others and therefore easier to look after.
